Perez-Olivo on Dateline NBC

April
28

The murder of Peggy Hall Perez-Olivo finally made it to prime time. This weekend, Dateline NBC showed a two-hour (!) special about the fatal 2006 roadside shooting of the popular Chappaqua elementary school aide called “A Long, Dark Stretch of Road.” The Journal News/LoHud.com covered the case and trial extensively, including the conviction of her husband, Carlos Perez-Olivo, for second-degree murder for her death. Dateline was allowed in the courtroom to film the opening and closing statements, as well as the verdict.

I got a kick out of seeing the lawyers I cover on a daily basis “do TV.” And it was interesting to see how Dateline told the story of the Perez-Olivo family, the killing and its aftermath using video shown at the trial and interviews with the couple’s two youngest children and Peggy’s sister, all of whom still contend that Perez-Olivo is innocent. Perez-Olivo is interviewed as well, wearing prison-issued clothing,  denying that he’s the killer.

As an aside, the hole that Perez-Olivo’s son, Merced, punched in the courthouse wall when he learned about his father’s conviction is still there today, more than six months later.
